Living in the Present Moment

In our fast-paced world we seldom find time to just “be.” We fill our lives with activities, write long to-do lists—we’re in motion from sunup to sundown. So many things need to get done, and we systematically go through the day checking items off along the way. Kids fed, dressed, and dropped off at school—check. Work e-mail opened and read—check. Meetings attended and reports written—check. Groceries picked up, dinner prepared—check. On and on this goes, day after day, keeping us from truly experiencing the moments that make up our lives. Have you ever arrived at home from your evening commute and had no recollection of actually driving home? Or perhaps you’ve been sitting with your child as she shares her day with you only to find that you didn’t really hear a word that she said. With so much to do, adults and kids barely notice the routine activities of our day, much less our emotional state.

In between activities, our thoughts sometimes take over, ranging from regrets about the past to worries about what the future holds. When was the last time you remember being in the moment? You may find that this is true for your child as well. She may worry about how life will change in the future, or she may be sad about events that have occurred in the past. But when we enter the present, it may seem as if time stands still. When you are fully present in life, you do not feel stressed; rather, you feel energized.
